LETS Miscellany

Planet-LETS

Planet-LETS is a LETSystem for the community of Planetary Connections, the newspaper that brings you positive news from around the planet.

The system is administrated by Mandy & John Winkworth, who sent out the first invitation to take an account in march '95 via the Spring issue of the paper.

Since then there has been a very good response so far with good trading between the 80 or so accounts. These numbers are about to be added to considerably, the latest issue of P.C. has attracted much interest with around another 40 potential accounts to come from it.

Account holders are spread around the UK as well as in France, & Spain. Some people are bemused by the idea of a Planetary Local Exchange Trading System, but local money systems serve communities rather than geographical boundaries.

We hope that through Planet-LETS people are being encouraged to also join their local LETS, as well as passing on the information required to start more systems. We see the development of the multi-LETS side of Planet-LETS coming into its own for healing systems as well as education, accommodation, and workshop/conferences.

The Planet-LETS directory has been carried in the last 3 issues of P.C., but now it is too big! so from now on the directory will be available separately, with only up-dates published in P.C.

LETS Camp

Difficult to believe, but last summer saw the Third LETS camp organised by Green and Away. The first and second were held in Malvern, this one in Gloucestershire. As far as we know, the first was the largest LETS gathering ever, 130 people from all over the country. This year we had slightly fewer people, but there was still the buzz of excitement as newcomers to the system discovered `old hands' and realised that all their problems had been met and at least partially solved by others.

Workshops were ably organised by John Rhodes of Stroud - it is a measure of his efficiency in relieving G & A staff of the workshops, that I can't even tell you what they were about!

The fact that some visitors were now at their Third conference makes me realise that we have created something enjoyable. Part of this is due to the workshops, part to the weather, and part to the G & A ambience. This is a posh word for tree bogs, solar showers, bread baked in an oil drum, food cooked on a home made wood stove.

All in all, an excellent mixture of good workshops, good company, good food, and wonderful weather!

Accredited Diploma Courses On The Way For LETS

Discussions are currently being held by LETS development organisations from around the world on the implementation of accredited diploma training courses in LETSystem design which will be available in the UK later in the year.

The "LETS design" course which was itself designed by Angus soutar together with the originator of the LETSystem Michael Linton in 1994, has been on offer for almost two years but only in Manchester and there has been no diploma awarded to date.

The diploma course will be based on the original design in the form of several modules, ranging from the fundamentals and ethics of LETS, through administration and starting systems, software, to registries, multi-LETS and development and teacher training.

The availability of an accredited diploma course in several locations around the UK facilitated by accredited trainers will do much to dispel the current misinformation being gathered and passed on by academics, institutions and foundations as well as by some grass root agencies within LETS. it is fitting also that those taking the course have the opportunity to be awarded a diploma for their effort. We welcome this initiative at LETS connect and are taking part in the discussion.
